Before and After Concrete Pour

Pictured here is a before and after pour picture of a steel-reinforced concrete staircase. The picture on the left clearly shows the inner resteel, or rebars, placed on risers in the formwork. The steel in designed to take the tension load in the stair case and also helps to prevent cracking. The bars are placed on risers so they are held in the proper position when pouring. Proper placement within the concrete is crucial to ensure they carry the tensile loads as the designer intended once the concrete has cured. After curing, the wooden forms are removed to be used again on another job. Finally, soil is placed around the structure to support the new steel-reinforced concrete staircase.

Seen here is a before and after picture of a concrete pour of a walkway entrance. This shot allows the viewer to see the inner rebar structure of the steps as well as the formwork necessary to cast the concrete in the shape desired. Formwork construction is usually the most labor intensive component of cast-in-place concrete construction.

Pictured here is an ADA sidewalk ramp. This type of sidewalk ramp is replacing older ramps according to the Americans with Disabilities Act. The current standards for sidewalk ramps include details for maximum running slopes and cross slopes, maximum grades and minimum dimensions for landing areas, as well as location of the detectable warning domes. The ADA creates design guidelines that help persons with disabilities navigate our public spaces with ease.

Culvert under Sidewalk

Pictured here is a culvert located along a ditch and goes under a sidewalk. A culvert is a pipe that goes from an open space to another open space, in this case the ditch on both sides of the sidewalk. Culverts are used to allow water to flow where otherwise it would collect and potentially cause flooding problems.
